Japan Launches Spacecraft to Mars’ Moon Phobos : Japan is taking a major step in space exploration. On October 20, 2026, the country launched its Martian Moons Exploration (MMX) mission. The spacecraft lifted off aboard an H3 rocket from the Tanegashima Space Center.

IBN24 NEWS NETWORK : The mission aims to explore Phobos, collect surface samples, and return them to Earth. Scientists hope to uncover new clues about the origins of Mars’ moons. They also want to understand how the solar system evolved.

If the mission succeeds, Japan will achieve a historic milestone. Scientists will study material collected directly from a moon of Mars for the first time.

Complete Timeline from 2026 to 2031

The MMX mission is designed to take several years, involving a journey to the Martian system, observations of its moons, surface exploration, sample collection, and a return journey to Earth.

A Small Explorer Built for Phobos

One of the most important components of the MMX mission is the IDEFIX rover, developed jointly by France’s CNES and Germany’s DLR. The compact, four-wheeled rover is designed to operate in the extremely low-gravity environment of Phobos. Unlike Earth, where gravity keeps vehicles firmly on the ground, Phobos has such weak gravity that a rover may bounce after making contact with its surface.

IDEFIX will examine the terrain, study surface conditions, and help identify a safe location for the main spacecraft to collect samples. Its planned surface operations are expected to last around 100 days. The rover’s findings will help mission controllers understand the challenges of working on Phobos and reduce the risks associated with sample collection.

Japan Aims to Bring Back at Least 10 Grams of Phobos Soil

The primary objective of the MMX mission is to collect at least 10 grams of material from the surface of Phobos and transport it safely back to Earth. The spacecraft will use a dedicated sampling system to gather soil, dust, and other surface material. The samples will then be secured inside a special return capsule for the journey home.

The capsule is expected to land in Australia in 2031, where scientists will recover the samples and transport them to laboratories for detailed analysis. Researchers will examine the material’s mineral composition, chemical properties, and geological characteristics to better understand the origin and evolution of Phobos.

How Were Mars’ Two Moons Formed ? Scientists Seek Answers

Mars has two small moons, Phobos and Deimos. Despite decades of research, their origins remain uncertain. The MMX mission aims to investigate two leading scientific theories.

According to this hypothesis, a large object collided with Mars, ejecting material into space. Some of this debris eventually came together to form the planet’s moons. Another possibility is that Phobos and Deimos originally formed as asteroids elsewhere in the solar system before being captured by Mars’ gravitational pull.

China and the United States Are Also Pursuing Mars Sample Missions

Japan is not the only country interested in bringing Martian material back to Earth. China has been developing plans for a Mars sample-return mission, while NASA’s Perseverance rover has already collected rock and soil samples on the Martian surface.
